LIGA MAC’S FOURTH ANNUAL JAZZ FEST

Get ready for the best ever Jazz Festival coming up on Sunday, March 30, 2008. It will again take place at the Tropicana Jockey Club in San Jose del Cabo, from 3 pm to 8 pm. The musical lineup this year is dynamite…you do not want to miss this event!!
There will again be a Silent & Live Auction with many fabulous gifts. And be assured this year that there will be an abundance of delicious food provided by the Tropicana, included with the purchase of your ticket.
Another year of exciting local talent includes Daline Jones and her accompaniment, The Diego Ramirez Trio, who will also perform a couple songs from their newly released CD, “El Ultimo Chilam Balam”; Marcie Castro on vocals and keyboard with flute player friend Wendy Luck from New York performing Brasilian music and the Peter Lenihan Trio;
The Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant of Minnesota has again provided a great guest headliner, Cuban born jazz pianist, Nachito Herrera. From his bio: “Widely recognized as a young genius, Ignacio "Nachito" Herrera stunned Cuban audiences at the age of twelve, performing Rachmaninoff's Concerto No. 2 with the Havana Symphony Orchestra. His love of classical music quickly combined with traditional Cuban rhythms under the instruction of the Cuban masters-Rubén Gonzalez, Jorge Gomez Labraña, and Frank Fernández. In his twenties, Nachito became the musical director at the famous "Tropicana" in Cuba where he continued to deepen his repertoire. In the late 1990's, Nachito joined the famed Cubanismo as its lead pianist, arranger, and musical director while cultivating a passion, talent and reputation in Latin Jazz; a striking influence in his music today.”

The $1,000.00 "Headliner" table offers a reserve table of 10 under the performance Palapa and 2 bottles of wine.

One of the most invaluable aspects of our new Centro de Apoyo Liga M.A.C., is its function as a distribution centre. In years gone by, Liga M.A.C. members would first shop for and then hand deliver bags of groceries to needy families. At most in any season, members were only able to accommodate 20 to 25 families. Because of its central location and because those in need are now able to make contact with Liga M.A.C., we are able to help hundreds of families. Now, every second Wednesday of the month, vouchers for food, clothing and information are “dispensed” to pre-qualified recipients.
Ace Registration
During the summer, before students head back to school, those that qualify for our Adelante Con la Educacion program need to pick up their school packages and vouchers for uniforms. Our Centro de Apoyo provides a central location for registration and package pick up. Without the centre, the job of locating and distributing packages would be Herculean.
Educational Programs:
Alas Program
Disappointed by the number of young girls who arrived at the Centro de Apoyo pregnant or with small children and no prospects, Community Services Program committee members decided to design a program to help. In May 2006 Liga M.A.C. offered its first “Alas” program. Geared towards 12 to 14 year old girls, 20 candidates were selected from the ACE program. The girls met every Saturday for 5 weeks to listen to guest speakers, discuss issues and consider educational and job opportunities. Facilitator Elva Haro introduced the young women to guest speakers and escorted them on field trips. With each week, the girls gained new confidence, new friends and a greater interest in their future and their community. The sessions ended with a pool party on the final Saturday where the girls paid tribute to their mentor, Elva.
Special thanks are due to Elva and her sister Martha Haro; the Liga M.A.C. crew of Cynthia Wickerink, Rocio Rosales, Suzanne Naylor and Susan Viney; guest speakers Alicia Escobar of Mary Kay Cosmetics and Dr. Elena Valderrain; managers Martha Zulema Navarro, Angelica Duran, Alma Camacho, Lupita Araiza and Alma Cristal of Coral Baja Resort which hosted one of the field trips; and a very special thank you to Terramar Tours who took care of the field trip travel needs.
Motivational Speakers
In early 2006, business man and lecturer at the Pan American University in Mexico City, Ricardo Zamora took time out of his busy schedule to spend an entire Saturday at the Centro de Apoyo Liga M.A.C. The centre was the perfect informal classroom setting for Ric to chat with groups of teens about their education prospects. From the response of the students it was clear that he had opened their eyes and minds to the possibilities that exist in Mexico and elsewhere to further their education and consider different empoyment options.
Literacy Classes
Every Thursday afternoon, Liga M.A.C. member Rocio Rosales opens the doors to the Centro de Apoyo Liga M.A.C. and invites in a small group of women. These ladies know the meaning of hard work. They have had to work twice as hard as others because they did not have the advantage of an education. These ladies are or rather were illiterate. With Rocio’s help they are discovering the whole new world of literacy.
